World War 1

1. What event caused Britain to join the war?
The event that caused Britain to join the war or the Allies was the
German invasion of Belgium. The Schieffen Plan was a plan made for the German army. It stated that they were to go around (through) Belgium but Britain felt they were getting too close to the their borders and thought that Germany would then invade them too. (Also Britain had an alliance with nuetral Belgium) Map is slightly unclear

2. Advances in warfare technology.

  • Rapid-fire machine gun- this weapon could kill soldiers in "waves". The shrapnel killed more soldiers then the actual guns themselves.
  • Long-range artillery gun- this weapon could shoot an enemy from more than 10 miles away.
  • Poison Gas- First used in 1915 by Germany then the Allies. This gas could either severely wound you or could actually kill you, although very useful it was an "uncertain weapon" because of the shifting winds those who launched it could be effected by it. It was known as one of the worst hazards of the war but eventually soldiers were given gas masks to protect themselves.
  • Tanks- first seen in 1916, Britain was the first to introduce the armored tank. They were heavily armed with machine guns and we used to safely drive across no man's land but the first tanks broke down a lot and didn't break the stalemate.
  • Aircraft- When airplanes were first used they were only meant to see and observe the movements of enemy troops. In 1915, however, Germany used zeppelins to attack the English Coast. Soon pilots or "Flying Aces" were attacking and fighting one another in the sky.
  • Submarines-Germans
used these to destroy the Allied side by sinking merchant ships that were carrying very important supplies to Britain. So the Allies used convoys, groups of merchant ships, to defend themselves.

3. How was propaganda used in the war?

First, propaganda is the spreading of ideas to promote a cause or damage an opposing cause. All goverments used this to entice men to join the military, or like in Britain and Germany, it asked the citizens to give money in support of the war. More than often it was used to hurt or damage an enemy.
